Thank you everyone for continuing to view my wine reviews.

Bodega Catena Zapata was founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, who passed on the winery to his son Domingo. Domingo’s son, Nicolás Catena Zapata, was born in 1939. When he was in his 20s, he went to Columbia University to get a business management PhD in New York, then went on to Berkeley. Nicolas was one of the first to introduce certain European and US winemaking techniques to Argentina and was instrumental in putting high-altitude, cool temperature Malbec from Mendoza on the map. Currently, Laura Catena, his daughter and the fourth generation of the family, runs the winery.

This wine has one of most beautiful labels I have seen. The label pays tribute to Malbec's history in France and its rise in Argentina. Four females that embody different landmarks in the history of the grape appear on the label. 1/ Eleanor of Aquitaine, who represents the birth of Malbec (Malbec started do gain prominence when it started to be grown in Cahors, France). 2/ the Immigrant, who symbolizes the movement of the Malbec grape variety to the New World. 3/ Phylloxera personifies the death of Malbec in the Old World, which enabled its rebirth Argentina. 4/ Adrianna Catena, who represents to importance of the Malbec grape to Catena Zapata.

This wine is made with 20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry fruit that is hand-loaded into new French oak barrels for a 100% barrel fermentation for a period of 28 days. The fermentation temperature is kept low and then the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months.

The grapes are taken from old vines from the Nicasia and Angélica vineyards. The origins of the vines are called “The Catena Cuttings” and is a prephyloxeric root stocks.

This wine has a 93 pts Wine Spectator rating and I bought it at Everything Wine for $151.
