Irving Berlin wrote “Marie” in 1928 for one of the first talking films, “The Awakening.” Its beginnings as a waltz were somewhat forgotten once Tommy Dorsey recorded his swinging and memorable version of it in 1937, with Jack Leonard on vocals and a trumpet solo by Bunny Berigan.
As with other songs by Irving Berlin, “Marie” is a rather simple tune that can be interpreted in many different ways. Hope you enjoy this four-hands rendition of it and the changes in styles and tempos!
