In this video, I explore the nuances of getting the right sound from an acoustic guitar through what I call the "four T's" - touch, tone, time, and taste. I share my personal journey from exclusively using a pick for many years to discovering finger-style playing after being inspired by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
I demonstrate how pick positioning affects tone, comparing the brighter sound when playing near the bridge versus the mellower tone when moving toward the neck. I discuss my preference for medium picks and show various techniques including hybrid picking (combining pick and fingers) and mention Richard Thompson as a master of this approach. I also share an insight from playing with Carlos Santana, who skillfully switches between pick and thumb techniques for different sounds.
Recently, I've grown to prefer the softer sound of skin on strings with just a hint of nail for articulation.
