Melissa Cross, an expert specialising in distorted vocals (Melissa prefers the term 'Noisy Vocals), emphasises the importance of vocal health while producing screams or distorted sounds. She teaches fry screaming, a technique that doesn't involve constriction and is healthier for the voice.
Fry screaming involves mode two, or the cricothyroid stretching of the vocal folds, which displaces muscle mass and creates higher frequencies without strain or loudness. This technique, when amplified by a microphone, can sound intense without causing harm to the vocal folds. By focusing on vowel shapes and manipulating the rear vocal tract, singers can achieve a wide range of sounds, allowing them to be heard over other instruments.
