Today’s video is about mastering vapor pressure deficit VPD, horticulture farming, and understanding how to calculate and use VPD. M. S. Karla Garcia discusses vapor pressure deficit, one of the many variables that need to keep under control for the ideal growing environment.

There's an environmental variable that we sometimes forget, we don't know, or we don't understand. So, let's discuss VPD or vapor pressure deficit. Vapor pressure deficit is a measurement related to humidity. We know humidity in our growing systems can be expressed as relative humidity, which I think is the most common measurement we usually use inside growing systems, and is expressed as percentage. Then we have vapor concentration, which is the amount of water present in a specific volume of air. And last, we have VPD. So, what exactly is VPD and why is this useful?

In simple terms, VPD is the amount of vapor that can still be stored in the air until saturation point is reached under the same temperature, and will be the actual pressure difference between the actual vapor pressure and the saturation vapor pressure. Why is this useful for growers? We know humidity is good for plants, but too high humidity can also create problems inside of growing systems. For growers, VPD gives an indication of the possibilities of the crop to keep transparent at a given temperature without danger of condensation, which is not good for plants.

Vapor pressure deficit is typically on the rise in cultivation hydroponic systems as plants start to disrupt airflow by getting larger and changing the shape of the area. More pressures are placed on the aeroponic system, so it must be taken into consideration in your aeroponics design.

Vapor pressure deficit (VPD) is the difference between the ambient air humidity and the water emitted by leaves due to evapotranspiration. For example, a farmer needs to choose appropriate pest spray application practices in order to prevent fruit blemishing or desiccation. Many studies have already been done on how VPD affects plant diseases. However, there are several uncertainties lurking in these studies.

The amount of moisture for plant growth is a major component of promoting healthy plant growth. A vapor pressure deficit in the growing system is used to calculate the availability of water that is normally not available to plants, such as from fog or pond water.

Water crops using only recirculated water may not be viable in zones where the air recycling period cannot provide enough moisture when compared to evapotranspiration rates. This is because the larger the vapor pressure deficit, the faster water will evaporate out of the soil and produce unsaturated conditions inside the crop growing media.
