This is the result of mudslides that pour into the crystal clear waters and suffocate the coral, the natural barrier that protects the island. This threat to the environment worries scientists because, for several years, the archipelago has been facing multiple scourges.
In 2018, with the emergence, off the coast, of an underwater volcano, Mayotte became a laboratory of what could happen elsewhere in 2050. Everywhere, the land has sunk by 15 to 20 centimeters and the water has risen by the same amount. For experts, this is exactly the expected effects of global warming.
