Mentally and Physically * How you arrive at different stages, different states of mind with gradual progress As you progress in the path of meditation some irreversible changes happen and in each stage it brings in something new which takes time to adjust. It slows you down but in a very effective way. Once you go beyond the fourth stage of meditation you change and you cannot go back to what you were before. From a drop you become the ocean and an evenness comes over you which is the ultimate goal of meditation. But it is not that meditation is the only way. Some people have experienced the same through devotion. Like for example Meera Bai or Christ. Their path was not of meditation but of devotion and surrender. In surrender the devotee surrenders to his God without any demands or questions. It is surely an easier path than that of meditation but only the very strong, very great, very intelligent, very graceful and very divine people can surrender. For most people their mind comes into play and causes confusion. With confusion you will not be able to see properly. In meditation you are like a monkey. You have to cling to the mother and if you hold tight you will not fall. But in surrender you are like a kitten lying down to be picked up by the mother whenever and not afraid of anything. A kitten lives without any burden as it has surrendered and does not care anymore. People with restive tendencies may want to be the monkey though. When you pursue intense meditation, you go through immense changes both physically and mentally. It is not just a superficial change in your thinking but also very profound changes in your mind and body. When you get to each stage of meditation it takes time to adjust to the new stage because each stage brings about something new, something more and something deeper. You automatically feel disconnected with the world and it is not a temporary disconnection. It becomes a struggle to gel with the worldly ways. You become calm and with no rush. You become very effective. It is like you have become ghee from the milk, you have gone through the process of heating and churning and now no process in the world can change you back into the milk. At some point on your journey, you go through irreversible changes. During the first four stages of meditation, you can easily go back to where you started but beyond the fourth stage it starts to sink in your very existence and then there is no return. The drop has then become the Ocean. Sri Krishna says to Arjuna, “when you become the ocean, all your desires will go into you, you will experience all the pleasures but they will not move you.
