How to air layer a Bonsai?
The ring method.

おはようございます。
盆栽 明樹園の大島です。
もみじ「獅子頭」の取り木方法を紹介します。
残念ならが、獅子頭単体での取り木は、不可能と言われています。
そこで、今回は山もみじの台木部分を利用して取り木をします。
【樹の紹介】
台木は山もみじ６年生です。
獅子頭の穂を接いで３年目になります。
このままでも充分楽しめる樹になると思いますが、
根張りと腰高サイズが気になります。
樹を左に倒して半懸崖樹形にすると、
「太く短くより力強い樹形になる」と思った。
そこで「取り木」をすることにしました。
【盆栽を取り木する方法は？】
1.獅子頭の鉢より、一回り大きい素焼鉢を準備します。
2.素焼鉢の中に水苔を敷きます。
緩衝材（クッション）です。
獅子頭の鉢にも水苔を敷きます。
土の落下と乾燥を防ぐためです。
3.素焼鉢の中に入れて、位置を調整します。
4.動かないように固定します。
5.取り木する位置を確認します。
6.確認した位置に、印をつけます。
7.カッターナイフで、剥離するための切込みを入れます。
8.約１㎝の幅で印をつけ、切込みを入れます。
9.形成層を剥離します。
10.乾燥を防ぐために、濡れたティッシュを巻きます。
11.植え替え時に、穴あてに利用する網をご覧の用にセットします。
12.環状剥皮した中央付近まで、培養土を入れます。
13.環状剥皮した中央にゴム製のマットを敷きます。
（ここがポイント）
マットなしだと、「根が下に伸びて、根の処理が大変。」
マットを敷くと、「根が横に伸びて、根張が綺麗。」
14.培養土を追加します。
15.水苔を載せます。
16.今回の作業はこれで、終了です。
【作業の適期は？】
取り木の適期は、４月～６月です。
【作業後？管理】
1.置き場は、半日陰の場所が、安全です。
2.根を満遍なく出すために、定期的に回転さます。
3.根は2～3週間で確認出来ます。
（むやみに動かさないこと。）
安全の為に、２ヵ月ぐらい経った頃に外します。
（状態によって異なります。）

I'll introduce a method of air layering a Japanese Maples,"Shishigashira".
Unfortunately, it is said that it is impossible to air layering "Shishigashira" by itself.
Therefore, this time, I will air layering a trees using the root part of the japanese maples "Yama-Momiji".
[Introduction of trees]
The rootstock is "Yama-Momiji", which is the sixth year.
It has been three years since I grafting "Shishigashira".
I think that it will be a tree that you can fully enjoy as it is,
I am worried about nebari and the length of a trunk.
So by tilting the tree to the left to make a half-cliff,
I thought, "Isn't it thicker, shorter, and stronger?".
I decided to air layering.
[How to air layer a Bonsai?]
1. Prepare a slightly larger bowl.
2. Spread sphagnum moss in the bowl.(As cushioning material.)
Spread sphagnum moss in the "Shishigashira" bowl. (To prevent soil from falling and drying.)
3. Put it in the bowl and adjust the position.
4. Secure it so it does not move.
5. Confirm the position for cutting.
6. Make a mark at the confirmed position.
7. Make a notch for peeling with a cutter knife.
8. Mark the width of about 1 cm and make a notch.
9. Peel off the formation layer. "Circular peeling"
10. Wrap a wet tissue to prevent it from drying out.
11. Set the net to be used for the pot bottom when repotting.
12. Add the soil up to the vicinity where the ring was peeled.
13. Place a rubber mat on the center of the peeled ring.
(Here is the point)
Without a mat, "Roots grow downwards, making root treatment difficult."
When you lay a mat, "The roots grow sideways and the roots are beautiful."
14. Add the soil.
15. Place the sphagnum moss.
16. This is the end of this work.
[When?]
Appropriate time for the tree is from April to June.
[And then? Aftercare]
1. The place of storage is a half-shade place. It's safe.
2. Rotate regularly to spread roots evenly.
3. The roots can be confirmed in 2-3 weeks.
(Do not move it unnecessarily.)
For safety, I will remove it after about two months.
(It depends on the condition.)
