Mérida is the capital and most populous city of the Mexican state of Yucatán, as well as the head of the homonymous municipality. It is located in the northwest of the state in the southeast of the country, a region in which it is the most inhabited urban area and its main social, cultural, educational and financial center.7 According to the 2020 Population and Housing Census of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), in that year the city had a population of 921,771 inhabitants, being the twelfth most populous in Mexico, while the Metropolitan Area of Mérida, which also includes the cities of Kanasín and Umán, had a population of 1 316,088 inhabitants, ranking as the eleventh most inhabited in the country.
