This video is about : মির্জা গালিব : কলকাতায় দুঃস্বপ্নের মামলা / Mirza Ghalib : Court case at Kolkata. Mirza Ghalib, born Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan in 1797, was a distinguished poet of the Mughal era whose work in Urdu and Persian literature has left an indelible mark on South Asian culture. Renowned for his evocative ghazals and intricate use of language, Ghalib’s poetry explored themes of love, loss, and the transient nature of life, resonating deeply with audiences both in his time and today. His writings not only captured the aesthetic and emotional essence of his era but also mirrored the socio-political changes occurring during the decline of the Mughal Empire. Celebrated for his literary genius, Mirza Ghalib remains a towering figure in the world of poetry, revered for his contributions to the cultural and literary heritage of the region.
Between 1828 and 1829, the renowned poet Mirza Ghalib undertook a significant journey to Kolkata to address a pressing personal matter: the restoration of his family’s pension. Originally granted by the Mughal administration, this pension had been halved, adversely affecting Ghalib’s financial stability. Despite previous appeals in cities like Delhi and Lucknow, his efforts had been unsuccessful. Determined to present his case directly to the East India Company authorities, Ghalib arrived in Kolkata on February 20, 1828. During his stay, he engaged with prominent officials, including Chief Secretary Andrew Sterling and Assistant Secretary Simon Fraser, seeking redress for his grievance. While awaiting a resolution, Ghalib immersed himself in the city’s vibrant literary scene, participating in Persian and Urdu mushairas (poetic symposiums) at venues such as Madrasa Aliah. Despite his efforts, the bureaucratic processes delayed a favorable outcome, and by August 1829, Ghalib departed Kolkata without securing the full restoration of his pension. This episode not only underscores the challenges he faced in navigating colonial administrative systems but also highlights his resilience and commitment to preserving his rightful legacy.
