Mirza Najaf Khan Tomb: नज़फ खां ने कैसे बदली Delhi की History? || Karbala Jor Bagh (BK Dutt Colony)
Mirza Najaf Khan Bahadur, often referred to simply as Mirza Najaf Khan, was an adventurer of Safavid descent who arrived in Delhi around 1740 from Iran, following the displacement of the Safavid dynasty by Nader Shah in 1736. He became a key courtier of Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II (1740–1782) and strengthened his position by marrying his sister into the family of the Shia Nawab of Awadh, earning the title of Deputy Wazir of Awadh. Mirza Najaf Khan participated in the Battle of Buxar and served as the Mughal army's highest commander from 1772 until his death in April 1782.
The unfinished tomb of Mirza Najaf Khan, located near Safdarjung Airport and close to the Tomb of Safdarjung in the Lodi Gardens, sits within a modern landscaped garden surrounded by a boundary wall. The tomb complex features a beautifully ruined entrance positioned at some distance from the main platform. At its center lies a striking red stone square platform, topped by a smaller platform with a flat roof but no dome. The graves of Mirza Najaf Khan and his daughter, Fatima (who passed away in 1820 CE), are marked with two marble cenotaphs.
The Karbala in BK Dutt Colony serves as a Shia burial ground, primarily used for the funeral of tazias, symbolic coffins representing Imam Husain Ibn Ali, the Prophet's grandson. A closer look reveals remnants of sacred materials once used in rituals, still visible on or near a few graves.
