Quartal arpeggios come from quartal harmony that creates a modern and ambiguous sound. It was the answer to the traditional tertian harmony to move away from defined sounds of the functional harmony that ruled music composition up to the 19th century. Quartal harmony sounded vague and didn’t resolve. It was used by impressionist composers and later Jazz musicians like Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Chick Correa and Herby Hancock. These days quartal harmony and arpeggios are used in Jazz, Fusion and progressive Rock by musicians like Alan Holdsworth and Matteo Mancuso to name two.
In this lessen you’ll learn all about quartal arpeggios, that are great for improvising to get a fresh and modern sound.
