In this tutorial I explain a technique for molding relief sculptures and similar shaped patterns. This is a good molding technique for applications where a delicate wax pattern may need to be demolded or when you want to save money on silicone and not pour a thick block mold. It is important to understand that this technique is not a substitute foe block molds, but a different approach that will apply to certain patterns. Like all molding and casting techniques, knowing when to use it is what makes it effective.

For the mold I used TC-5130F silicone. TC-5130F is a fast setting, 25A platinum silicone that is ideal for fast poured molds and fast brush-on molds. Here, I thickened TC-5130F with SC-5001 thickening agent to make a brushable paste for the 2nd and 3rd coat of silicone. I backed the silicone brush on mold with a poured slab of Hydrocal. For larger applications, TC-300 rigid foam could be used to create a lightweight "mother mold." Tooling resin such as TC-1630 could also be used.
