চট্টগ্রামের শঙ্খ নদের উত্তর পাড়ে আনোয়ারার ষোলকাটা গ্রাম, দক্ষিণে বাঁশখালীর জলদী। ষোলকাটা গ্রামেই বাস করতেন বাংলার সুবেদার শায়েস্তা খাঁর সেনাপতি, পরবর্তীতে প্রতাপশালী জমিদার জবরদস্ত খাঁ ওরফে মনু মিয়া। যৌবনকালে সেই মনু মিয়া প্রেমে পড়েন পাশের জলদী গ্রামের অনিন্দ্য সুন্দরী, সওদাগর-কন্যা মলকা বানুর।বিয়ের প্রস্তাব পাঠালেন মনু । মলকাবানু রাজি, তবে শর্ত দিলেন তিনি নববধূ সেজে নদী পার হয়ে শশুরবাড়ি যাবেন না, যাবেন সড়কপথে।। মলকাকে পাওয়ার জন্য স্রোতস্বিনী শঙ্খের বুকে স্বল্প সময়ে বাঁধ দিলেন মনু মিয়া। রাজ্যজুড়ে বাজল বিয়ের ডঙ্কা। অশ্বারোহী সৈন্য, হস্তিবাহী কামান আর হাজার হাজার বরযাত্রী নিয়ে মলকা বানুর বাড়িতে পৌঁছে গেলেন বর মনু মিয়া। বউ সাজিয়ে মলকাবানুকে নিজগৃহে নিয়ে এলেন। মলকাবানু-মনু মিয়ার প্রেম উপ্যাখ্যান রচিত হলো হঁঅলা, গান বাঁধলেন গায়েনরা..
