Mahabharata mentions that Parshurama donated the entire earth to sage Kashyapa and retired to Mahendra mountain for doing his ascetic penances.The son of Jamadagni (Parasurama) after twenty-one times making the earth bereft of Kshatriyas wended to that best of mountains Mahendra and there began his ascetic penances. In the Hindu epic Ramayana Mahendra mountain is mentioned as the place where the great sage and warrior Parashurama performed penance. Mahendra mountain is believed to be located in the western state of Gujarat India.According to the Ramayana after killing the Kshatriyas Parashurama went to the Mahendra mountain to perform penance and seek forgiveness for his sins. He lived there for several years and meditated on Lord Shiva eventually gaining his favor and receiving many boons from him.Today there are several places in Gujarat that are associated with the story of Parashurama and Mahendra mountain including the Parashurama temple in the town of Bhavnagar which is said to be built at the spot where Parashurama is believed to have performed his penance. Vishnu incarnated Parshurama Avatar in Treta- Yug to exterminate kshatriyas kings who strayed from their path and had become a great burden to Bhoomidevi (Mother Earth) and her children. Parshuram is supposed to be alive even now. He is blessed to be immortal. He was born in treta yuga - he annihilated 21 generations of kshatriya. And then when Rama was born and he broke Shiva Dhanush Parshuram recognised his valor and deeming him to be incarnation of Vishnu like him, handed over the responsibility ensuring prevalence of Dharma in society. He went on to do penance at Mahendragiri. In Dwapar yuga Bhishm Karna and Dronacharya acquired divine weapons from him. His responsibility is not over yet. He has to train Kalki avatar in martial arts and weapons near the end of Kali Yuga to help him end evil and reestablish satyayug. After that he will be appointed as Saptarshi in next cycle of Yugas.
