Most Remote National Park in the lower 48 States- ONE day hiking on Isle Royale in Lake Superior- Taking the Ranger III ferry.
Isle Royale National Park is the least visited National Park in the lower 48 states and the most revisited National Park!
Most people would plan their trip to Isle Royale months if not a full year in advance! The trip requires finding transportation to remote island in northern Lake Superior. I made my reservation 2 weeks before leaving!
You take a ferry to Isle Royale from Wisconsin and multiple points in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I chose to take the National Park's the Ranger III from Houghton Michigan. It's a vintage boat making the 6 hour voyage 2 times per week to Rock Harbor.
At the mercy of availability, I chose to go to Isle Royale on Friday and come back the next morning. It is very common to spend 5 or more days on the island to justify the long journey and to backpack further into the island. Some people even venture the full 45 miles o the island between Rock Harbor and Windigo. Seems like a great backpacking trip for next time!
I stayed at the Rock Harbor campground in my tent. It was raining, but I attempted the hikes to Scoville Point and Suzy's Cave. I didn't make it to either, but the trail and view was overwhelmingly beautiful along the way! Amazing failures of a hike!
I can't wait to go back to Isle Royale! Without a doubt a unique experience that I am excited to experience. Even if it was just for one day!
