Compte tenu de son identification étroite avec la musique française, surtout dans la dernière partie de sa carrière, il est parfois surprenant que Walter Gieseking soit allemand. En fait, il est né en France, à Lyon, le 5 novembre 1895, son père étant un éminent entomologiste allemand. Pendant l'enfance du pianiste, la famille a beaucoup voyagé en France et en Italie, et il a reçu une éducation privée. Bien qu'il commence à jouer à quatre ans, il ne commence l'enseignement systématique qu'à seize ans, au Conservatoire de Hanovre. Les débuts de Gieseking ont lieu en moins d'un an, et à vingt ans, il donne un cycle presque complet des sonates pour piano de Beethoven...
