In his budget speech, Aljunied MP Faisal Manap drew attention to the plight of the middle class in Singapore, sometimes described as the ‘sandwiched’ class, earning too much to qualify for the bulk of social assistance and support; but too little to have a significant financial cushion.
He cited examples of his Kaki Bukit residents, where they fell through the social assistance gaps, and expressed hope that the relevant agencies will be able to exercise flexibility and review each case more holistically in assessing an applicant’s eligibility for assistance.
Given the worrying data about lower employment prospects of new cohorts of university and polytechnic graduates, Faisal urged the government to take a more proactive approach to incentivize employers to hire Singaporeans above the required dependency ratio, as proposed by WP in its GE 2020 manifesto.
