The Muktsar Horse Fair, held annually during the Maghi Mela in Muktsar, Punjab, commemorates the martyrdom of 40 Muktas (Sikh soldiers) who sacrificed their lives in 1705. This year, the fair introduced polo matches for the first time, organized by the Punjab Horse Show group. The event featured three teams—Chandigarh Polo Club, Punjab Polo Team, and Team Servicemen—competing in exhibition matches on January 11 and 12, 2025. The inclusion of polo aimed to promote equestrian sports in the region, adding a dynamic spectacle to the traditional festivities. The matches attracted equestrian enthusiasts and local spectators, enhancing the cultural significance of the fair.
The Punjab Horse Show group, known for organizing elite equestrian events, played a pivotal role in bringing polo to the fair. Their efforts reflect a growing interest in horse sports within Punjab, contributing to the preservation and promotion of equestrian traditions.
The successful introduction of polo at the Muktsar Horse Fair has set a precedent for future events, with plans to prepare local teams for upcoming tournaments. This initiative not only enriches the fair’s offerings but also provides a platform for budding polo players in the region.
Overall, the addition of polo matches to the Muktsar Horse Fair signifies a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, fostering a renewed appreciation for equestrian sports in Punjab.
