The episode is part one of a new series called "How To Harmonize a Melody" where I will demonstrate Tonal, Linear, Bitonal, Modal and Polytonal techniques. There are rules of counterpoint that were established during the common practice period from 1600-1900 that you can apply Roman Numeral analysis to but only if you want to copy the styles of the masters of those eras. These rules were broken 100 years ago by people like Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. If you want to chart a new course, you must find new rules! I will save common practice videos for the right time but that's not now.
I this episode I harmonize a simple 5 note melody G-Bb-Eb-G-F with Linear, Tonal, Bitonal and Polytonal examples.
