Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office alongside U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, Elon Musk, the multi-billionaire business mogul, defended his new role as the head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — a temporary advising body to the White House that is intended to cut costs and investigate fraudulent activity within government bodies. When told many of his “detractors” believe he is “orchestrating a hostile takeover of government” in a “non-transparent way,” Musk said, “The people voted for major government reform… They're going to get what they voted for.” Touching on the recent gutting of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the SpaceX and Tesla CEO admitted there were “some worthy things” within the organization, but said it was not of good value to the government, adding that it “was influencing elections in ways that [are] dubious.” Trump commended Musk and his team for uncovering fraudulent acts and making cuts of “billions of dollars” in a matter of only two weeks while labelling USAID "really corrupt."
