I'm not sure whether today's jazz students still talk about the "vibe".
I haven't heard any chatter about it on the YouTube-verse.
But when I was coming up, it was a thing.
It's not Terence Fletcher, exactly (though one of my stories has a Fletcher-like character). But it's also not that saccharine "baby I'll call you we'll do lunch, they loved you" Hollywood brand of BS.
The vibe lets your counterpart know he's f@#$ed up, but refuses to be direct. The vibe is pure passive aggression.
So why do we care?
The same reason audiences loved Whiplash. It's real-life tension. And, more importantly, it's part of the "dues paying" experience.
But should the vibe continue, or is it time for a new way of communicating.
That's all in the video.
