I'm a 29 year old guy, and this story involves my mom 57 female, my dad 55 male, and my older sister Claire 32 female. We're a middle class family, nothing extraordinary. My mom runs a small business, and my dad has been a homemaker for as long as I can remember. Clare though has always been the golden child. Growing up, she was the one with the straight a's, the talent for everything she touched, and the charm to win over anyone.
I wasn't a screw up or anything, but compared to Clare, I was always just there. She was the star and I was the steady one in the background. 2 years ago, my mom's business took a nose dive. Mismanagement and bad financial decisions had put her in serious debt. She was on the verge of bankruptcy and things were dire.
Suppliers were threatening lawsuits, her employees were quitting, and the bills were piling up. She was desperate, and that's when she turned to me for help. At the time, I just bought my first home and was starting to build up some savings.
