Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a French Symbolist artist known for his surreal dreamlike and mysterious works. This video contains more than 80 of his figurative drawings and printmaking from 1878 to 1899. He worked mostly in charcoal and monochromatic lithograph during this period and many of his works are also inspired by literary works such as Edgar Allen Poe, and Charles Baudelaire.
His drawings and lithographs are admired for their ethereal quality and surreal imagery. These works often contain haunting landscapes, dark mythical creatures, and figures, blending reality with fantasy.
Redon is a master of tonal contrasts. The delicate details of his monochromatic pieces have an otherworldly depth. He was heavily involved in the Symbolist movement in France. His work is also considered a precursor to Surrealism and influenced movements like Surrealism, and inspired artists interested in the intersection of art and imagination.
"My drawings inspire, and are not to be defined. They place us, as does music, in the ambiguous realm of the undetermined." - Odilon Redon
