What can I say about the Convair B-58 Hustler? Well, a lot, really; in this video, I set the record straight, there is too much nonsense out there claiming that the Hustler was a failure, a waste of money, dangerous to fly, high accident rate, blah, blah, I say they are WRONG. And I will explain why they are wrong, terribly wrong; make sure to watch to the end.
People say that the 1967 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is one of the most beautiful cars ever made; to me the B-58 is one of the most beautiful machines that has ever been borne from the minds of men.
Every aspect of the Convair B-58, the world's first supersonic bomber, exudes danger; it’s as though she was intentionally designed to be breathtakingly beautiful first and a high-altitude Mach 2 agent of Armageddon second. Designed in the 1950s, it seems like the guys at Convair ditched their slide rules for dark shades and Vespas.
From her sweeping delta wings to the long, slender undercarriage, looking like a cross between an angry hornet and a praying mantis, she appeared to be flying at Mach 2 just sitting on the Tarmac. Ok, enough of the gushing; just know this, she is simply eye candy and terrified the Soviets, they must have let out a sigh of relief when they found out the Americans had canceled the B-58.
