As busloads of migrants arrived on their streets in the past few years, the Democratic mayors of New York, Denver, Boston and Chicago promised to welcome and protect the newcomers. On Wednesday, they defended their status as “sanctuary” cities at a Republican-led hearing that became a skewering session rife with political trip wires.
The lengthy hearing was a made-for-television spectacle pitting four Democratic leaders against a largely hostile congressional committee that accused them of protecting criminals and thwarting the president’s plan to deport millions of people who are in the country illegally.
The summons to testify made clear the tone, calling the cities’ policies — which limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities to varying degrees — “misguided and obstructionist.” A highly unusual and starkly partisan three-minute video issued by the House Oversight and Government Committee last week previewed the event, focusing on violent crimes attributed to undocumented immigrants over an ominous soundtrack. “GAME ON,” it concludes.
