On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Santa Monica Closeup photojournalist Fabian Lewkowicz documented the National Guard Military Police stationed at key entry points between Santa Monica and Los Angeles, including Moomat Ahiko Way, Ocean Avenue, 4th Street, 7th Street, and 26th Street. These critical checkpoints remain heavily guarded as Los Angeles maintains active evacuation orders in response to the Palisades Fire. Public access to Los Angeles evacuation zones is strictly prohibited, with only first responders, utility crews, and authorized press allowed entry.
According to a statement from the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), access into the evacuation zones from Santa Monica is controlled by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Residents eager to return are urged not to come to the entry points, as unauthorized entry can compromise the safety of first responders and hinder recovery efforts. Those seeking specific information on access should contact LAPD directly.
As of Monday, January 13, the City of Santa Monica continues to enforce a voluntary evacuation warning for areas north of San Vicente Boulevard due to ongoing critical fire weather. Residents in these areas may return but are advised to stay prepared to leave at short notice if conditions worsen. Other areas of Santa Monica have seen evacuation warnings lifted, but heightened monitoring and security remain in place.
The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), in partnership with the National Guard, is manning traffic control points, assisting residents with safe repopulation, and securing the perimeter of evacuation zones. Since the curfew was enacted on January 7, SMPD has made over 40 arrests for crimes including burglary, drug possession, and outstanding warrants. The curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. remains in effect for all evacuation zones to prevent looting and ensure public safety.
Mayor Lana Negrete thanked residents for their patience and resilience, emphasizing that while Santa Monica was fortunate to avoid direct fire damage, the city remains committed to supporting neighboring communities that suffered catastrophic losses. Santa Monicaโs community development team is actively coordinating with local partners to provide assistance for displaced residents, including housing and business relocation services.
Additionally, Santa MoniCARES continues to gather donations and special offers from local businesses to support first responders and evacuees. Local Assistance & Disaster Resource Centers will open on Tuesday, January 14, at UCLA Research Park West, offering essential services for those affected.
Residents returning to their homes are reminded to exercise caution due to potential debris and downed trees caused by high winds. Any immediate hazards, including downed power lines, should be reported by calling 911. Authorities also warn residents to remain vigilant against scams and price gouging, with state laws prohibiting price increases of more than 10% during emergencies. Concerns about price gouging can be reported to the Santa Monica Consumer Protection Unit
As recovery efforts continue, the partnership between local law enforcement and the National Guard remains crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. Residents are encouraged to stay informed, adhere to official guidelines, and remain patient during this ongoing emergency.
