In this episode, we embark on a nerve-wracking yet unforgettable sailing adventure through the C&D Canal in extreme fog. Before setting sail, we witnessed a murmuration of starlings—a synchronized dance of thousands of birds weaving patterns in the sky. As we entered the fog-laden canal, visibility vanished and we became heavily reliant on the autohelm. The one time we turned it off we ended up doing a 360 turn and losing track of where we were. Tension mounted as we realized a 100-foot ship was less than half a nautical mile away—completely invisible in the fog. We finally caught sight of land again as we approached Rock Creek and we anchored right in the middle of the channel.
