‘Dream-folk is the music of escapism. But no matter how you try to escape from the reality into the books, music, and dreams, She is nevertheless standing behind your shoulder.
When the War came to Ukraine, you couldn’t keep your eyes from it. It was not only at the front-line, but it was also in the conversations, minds, and on the screens.
Our native city of Zaporizhzhia appeared to be next to the front-line. Refugees at schools, soldiers in the streets, injured people in the trains and at the hospitals.
The hate burning inside of people.
Sometimes we had to struggle through that hate like through dirty water – for performing in the ‘wrong’ country, singing in the ‘wrong’ language, having the courage to take the side of none of the parties to the conflict. We felt scared, we felt powerless. It could not be explained with words that it was us, ourselves, who created this hell on Earth and that we all keep on sinking to the very bottom of it – with every shot, with every evil word.
In those days I have written a song There’s Nothing Here But Love to say aloud everything that could no longer be kept in silence. So that, if a night attack or a knife in a backstreet should happen, there would stay a crucial song. The one after which nothing is to be feared.
That’s because there’s nothing here but love.
