The long-awaited new Renault 5 is here! Blending retro looks inspired by the original into a battery-powered base, Renault's five-door is a natural rival to the Mini Cooper SE. Albeit one that starts from just £23,000, which is a full seven grand (yes, as in £7k) less than the electric Mini. So, what's the catch? Join Ben Welham as he samples the new French model to see if it lives up to all the hype.
Using a 52kWh battery that powers a 150hp front-mounted electric motor, the top-grade Renault 5 Iconic in our video has warm hatch performance and a near 250-mile range. It looks like the perfect city car for fashionistas, which is exactly why the boffins at Mini will be getting a little hot under the collar. This is very much a case of Renault elbowing its way onto the Cooper SE's turf.
That said, Renault does have recent form in this area, having fielded the slightly larger and much cuddlier-looking Zoe in the category from 2013. But that now discontinued EV didn't have an iconic history tied to its name, where as this new 5 picks up where the original combustion-powered supermini left off in 1996, after 24 years of being one of Europe's favourite cars. No pressure then...
