Shimano recently overhauled their lower tier groupsets and amalgamated them into the Shimano CUES range of interchangeable 9, 10 and 11-speed options. My view on this groupset offering is that it has been targeted to incorporate E-bikes by default. E-bikes generate a lot of torque, and having a groupset that can cater for that level of torque allows it to encompass standard gearing at the same time.
Commercially, this is bound to be a success due to Shimano's size and market share.
At a technical level, some interesting traits are the riveted chain rings which will require a new crankset when they wear out, new hubs with deep groove ball bearings and the use of square taper bottom brackets.
