In the late 1980s, Nintendo OWNED the video game market and monopolized the entire game creation industry. Indeed, their dominance - and control - was unmatched.
Then, Tengen game along. The offshoot of Atari used corporate espionage, lied to the United States government, and obtained patented Nintendo source code, enabling them to bypass Nintendo's stringent quality control measures and make their own unlicensed games.
This is the story about how Tengen challenged Nintendo and helped to set the stage for more than a few companies to knock Nintendo out of command over the home console market.
