Today, I explore Poinsettia, Nevada, to see what I can find.
It was never a fully developed town, but served mainly as a mining camp for the nearby Poinsettia Mine. The mine was discovered in 1914 and primarily produced mercury by extracting cinnabar ore. After a rediscovery of cinnabar in 1929, mining efforts became more organized, with Vet Baxter eventually acquiring the claims and operating a 175-foot shaft. Mining continued sporadically until around 1944.
After Baxter died in 1973, a Boy Scout troop from Hawthorne took an interest in the site, using it for camping and helping with preservation. Today, a few miner cabins, a hoist house, and a grave still remain. Hidden within a steep basin and reachable only by rough dirt roads.
I hope you enjoyed the video! I'm Dave; I set out on a life of adventure, exploring abandoned mines, ghost towns, unusual places, and everything that lurks in the middle of nowhere!
