🔥Welcome to the third film in our series exploring the beauty and culture of Norway. In this episode, we delve into the unique architecture and grass roofs of Norwegian houses.
As we travel from Sandefjord to Geilo by car, we are surrounded by breathtaking nature and magnificent sites. But what stands out to us are the charming houses with their distinctive grass-covered roofs.
Until the 19th century, turf houses were a common roofing material in Norway, providing durability, heat and waterproofing, and improving the microclimate in the house. However, as tiles and iron began to replace them, turf roofs began to disappear. Fortunately, they were saved from complete extinction by romantic enthusiasts who revived ancient traditions.
Today, peat roofs are still used in the construction of modern private houses, and their advantages are undeniable. They are cool in summer and warm in winter, and the weight of the roof gives greater stability to the structure of the house.
Join us as we explore the history and significance of these grass roofs, and learn why they continue to be an important part of Norwegian culture. If you haven't already, be sure to check out our previous films where we discuss Norway's status as the world leader in electric vehicles and one of the richest countries in the world.
