Anticipating a confrontation with NATO, the Soviet Union manufactured vast amounts of military equipment throughout its lifetime. Following its dissolution in 1991, its arsenal was divided among the newly independent states that were once part of the Union and sold abroad on the global market. Today, despite their obsolescence, many of these weapon systems continue to play crucial roles in the arsenals of various armies worldwide. Recognizing a lucrative market, various defense sector companies have begun offering modernization packages for these weapons, claiming to be able to do anything from breathing some new life into the outdated equipment to bringing it up to par with the most modern systems in the world, depending on the customer's ability to pay.
Thanks to its history as part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine inherited a substantial number of tanks and specialized factories upon gaining independence. This left the Ukrainians in a good position to begin work on their own modernization solutions for the inherited weapon systems. In the early 2000s, two modernization packages for the Soviet T-62 Main Battle Tank (MBT) were developed: the T-62AG and the T-62AGM. Both kits were capable of elevating any 2nd Generation T-62 MBT variant to 3rd Generation MBT standards of the time. While the T-62AG progressed to the prototype stage, the T-62AGM remained mostly a concept. However, had the development finished, it would have been an upgrade kit similar to the T-55AGM, just for the more modern T-62 platform.
