After much wait and anticipation, Gibson has finally launched the new “80s” Explorer and Flying V as part of the mainstay line up. I’ve been impatiently awaiting this release as I was excited to finally have true-to-spec ‘84 Alder Body, Maple neck Vs and Explorers back on the market. What Gibson delivered wasn’t quite that at all - it is more so a “tribute” / re-envisioning of the original ‘84 design… but these new 80s Tribute Humbuckers are the real show stoppers! Not Quite What I Was Expecting, BUT… these are pretty nice… although definitely expensive at 2499 when that same money will buy you a 70s V/Explorer that is much higher spec’d and also brand new - just depends on what you’re going for I guess! I feel $1999 would’ve been a fairer target price for these.
The White 80s Explorer is scheduled for release later this year... let's see if this color was delayed for any particularly reason.........
