As the threat of 25 per cent tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump looms in Mexico, the nation has committed to its biggest criminal handover in years. On Thursday, officials expelled not only the alleged drug cartel boss Rafael Caro Quintero, but 28 other supposed cartel members to the U.S. too. “[The expulsion was] done under the norms of national security law,” Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero told reporters, adding, “where the parameters of necessity for political stability reasons, both in Mexico and in the U.S., are established.” On Friday, Caro Quintero – and Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, leader of the notorious Juarez cartel – were arraigned at a New York City court. Caro Quintero, 72, pleaded not guilty to federal drug trafficking charges filed in Brooklyn in 2020 – which could result in his execution if he is determined responsible. Fuentes, 62, also entered a not guilty plea in a separate indictment.
