Purnima, from Dehradun, belonged to a middle-class family. She was told that her future husband, living in Edinburgh, Scotland, was a veterinary doctor. However, upon reaching Edinburgh, she was shocked to discover that he was a bus driver.
To make things worse, he already had a first wife and a child. The house was miserable, with no proper kitchen, no clean bathroom, and everything was filthy. Her dreams shattered, and she felt like a bucket of cold water had been thrown over her.
Before the wedding, her parents believed the groom was simple and decent, especially since he claimed not to want any dowry. But later, he demanded dowry and even asked for Purnima’s ticket expenses. Her mother pawned her jewelry to arrange the ticket. Once in Edinburgh, Purnima endured physical abuse to the extent that she bled from her nose and ears. Despite the suffering, she adjusted, worked at a shop, and tried to make things work. However, her husband's behavior only worsened.
Five years later, his first wife divorced him, yet the abuse towards Purnima continued. At one point, he abandoned her in India and returned to Scotland. Determined to reclaim her life, Purnima pursued legal action, retrieved her passport, and went back to Edinburgh. There, she secured a job at British Telecom and bought a house, yet her husband insulted her by calling her a "parasite" and demanded rent.
But life had a twist in store. Through friends, Purnima met someone new, and they fell in love. She divorced her abusive husband, remarried, and had a son. Today, she lives in China, teaches English for free, and is well-respected. Purnima’s message is clear — share your struggles with your parents, never tolerate abuse, and remember that every life has a rainbow. Her rainbow is her son and her loving husband.
