Tarikh E868
Goa’s history is shaped by a mosaic of cultures and faiths, including the Jewish community that once lived and thrived there. Under the Bijapur Sultanate led by Yusuf Adil Shah, Jews found refuge and flourished as traders, navigators, and craftsmen, integrating local commerce with far-reaching maritime routes. When the Portuguese seized Goa in 1510, they brought the Inquisition and enforced Catholicism, compelling Jews to convert and punishing those who secretly practiced their traditions. Figures like Gaspar da Gama and Garcia da Orta highlight their significant contributions and tragic fates. Old Goa’s remnants, from streets once known as “Rua dos Judeus” to architectural elements suggesting Jewish workmanship, offer silent testimony to their presence. Over time, many Jews migrated to other parts of India or left for Israel, leaving behind a cultural legacy etched into the region’s historical and architectural narrative.
