Massive protests in the late 1980s and '90s led to the protection of the ancient forests of Opal Creek in Oregon's Central Cascades. The 2020 Beachie Creek Fire burned through Opal Creek before spreading to several communities in the nearby Santiam Canyon.
Currently, the extent and severity of fire damage to the Opal Creek drainage is unknown. "Oregon Field Guide" produced this feature in 1998 when it was a newly-designated wilderness area.
