A very very happy and prosperous Pongal to our Youtube family. We wish we could be in India celebrating surrounded by all of you but for now this will have to do. We both have been recovering from sickness and getting back to routine and work and we weren't able to do much. We still wanted to think of our home and our people and culture in India and have a small celebration. We also wanted to thank God for the harvest and the food and the people in our lives. What a beautiful gift and blessing!

“Within south Indian and north Sri Lankan regions, Pongal celebrates the harvest of rice and its abundance, and is a time of gratitude for the crop. It honours the bounty of the land, as well as the cattle that help with tilling it.

The name “Pongal” itself comes from the Tamil word pongu, meaning “to overflow” or “to boil over,” a reference to the overflowing of milk, which symbolises prosperity and abundance in Hindu tradition. The ceremonial dish, also called Pongal, is traditionally made with freshly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery. It’s first offered to the gods in a ritual before being shared with the community and cattle.

The festival’s origins date back to ancient times, with references to it found in texts from the Sangam Age (200 BCE to 300 AD). Historians trace its roots to the Dravidian Harvest Festival, which marked the end of winter solstice and the start of harvest season. The celebration is believed to coincide with the beginning of the Tamil solar calendar, typically falling in mid-January. In Tamil, it’s often referred to as Thai Pongal, with Thai denoting the Tamil month that corresponds to this time.

Pongal is celebrated with various customs and rituals, but at its core, it’s a time to honor the bounty of the land—and the dish that bears its name.” - @condenasttraveller
