Overlanding Ladder Build - Research, Design, Bend, Welding

Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Today I’m building a overlanding ladder for my 2004 toyota 4Runner. I go through my typical process of research, design, bend & welding. I’ll show how I made a ladder template using pvc pipe to help me calculate the tube angle and lengths. I personally made this because I love the way it looks and it will help make it more comfortable to get up to my roof rack to strap down gear for when the family and I go camping. I do still step on my sliders/ door sills and tires, but I simply enjoy the convenience of the ladder in a lot of situations. I find it similar to tools that I never thought I would use, but then I have one and end up wondering how I ever got by without one. Some of you might be wondering is it even worth making one over just buying one. I’ll explain my thoughts on why “saving money” isn’t the only benefit. I enjoy the process. The exercise my mind gets when figuring angles and overall developing new skills. Because you never know when you will need them. 3D Printed File (STL) PV Angle Jig : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5197464 Alternate way to get Tube Angles & Length: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekxp1XxMh1Q&list=LL&index=27&t=170s&ab_channel=OttoFactory Watch all other things I fabricated for my Toyota 4Runner https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLje9EGdLtfx4QAk5gnzJ13XqyFyA92Tp- Read more about my PC Setup that I use for SolidWorks and video editing https://rathasochenda.com/pc-build-2019/ Video Chapters 0:00 - Introduction 0:48 - Goals for the ladder 1:02 - Research & Design Process 1:54 - Building the Top & Bottom Liftgate Mounting Plates 4:23 - How to measure Tube Bend Angles using PVC Pipe as a Guide 6:42 - Bending with JDsquared model 32 Tube bender in Vertical Position 8:07 - Welding the ladder 8:45 - Finalizing the Ladder Bottom Mount Attachment Points 11:43 - Installing the Ladder 12:34 - Installing new Liftgate Shocks to account for additional weight 12:57 - How I use the ladder to get up to my roofrack 13:26 - Final thoughts Links of products/tools used in the video: Liftgate Struts/shocks: https://amzn.to/3Ia06i4 Steel-it Paint: https://amzn.to/3mJDmOq Tube Notcher: https://amzn.to/3mzTnXc Hole Saw: https://amzn.to/3t3sTP0 Tube Bender: https://www.jd2.com/model-32-tube-bender-manual Alternative Tube Bender: https://amzn.to/3gH4vO9 Digital Level and Angle Gauge: https://amzn.to/3yuWcLC 123 Blocks : https://amzn.to/31rHVVh Laser Level: https://amzn.to/38hBCDC 3M Double Side ½” Tape: https://amzn.to/3G2IHao 3M Double Side 2” Tape: https://amzn.to/3GasQ9C Makita Angle Grinder: https://amzn.to/38Mtqf0 3M Fiber Disc: https://amzn.to/3yqvROq 3M Flap Disc: https://amzn.to/3mGpJzG Palm Sander: https://amzn.to/3By8FA7 Digital Protractor: https://amzn.to/3Dnport Anti-Spatter: https://amzn.to/3zoQJa5 3m Grip Tape: https://amzn.to/2Wt96MD The welding helmet I use: https://amzn.to/3uS0YBB Mig Welding Machine: https://amzn.to/3yhMdJw Tig Welding Machine: https://amzn.to/3pWTRYx Follow my projects on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ratha.soche...
