Narrated 'Aishah (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ordered that the mosques be built in residential districts and that it be cleaned and perfumed. [Reported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and at-Tirmidhi. The latter considered it Mursal [missing link in the chain after the Tabi'i (student of a Companion)].
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that a black man (or a black woman) used to clean the mosque, and he died. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked about him, and they said that he had died. He said, “Why did you not tell me? Show me his grave.” (Or he said, “her grave.”) So he went to her grave and offered the funeral prayer for her. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 458; Muslim, 956).
Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Baari, “The hadeeth indicates the virtue of cleaning the mosque, enquiring after servants and after friends if they are absent.”
Taking care of the mosques and tidying the furniture etc inside them is something that is praiseworthy and encouraged. The one who does that will be rewarded by Allah for this good deed.
Therefore, vacuuming the carpets, washing the towels and all other forms of cleaning and caring for the Masjid are not insignificant acts. They are meritorious deeds which hold great rewards as can be seen from the above-mentioned Aḥādīth.
Allah has commanded us to venerate the mosques as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“In houses (mosques) which Allah has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to be honoured), in them His Name is remembered [i.e. Adhaan, Iqaamah, Salaah (prayers), invocations, recitation of the Quran]. Therein glorify Him (Allah) in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings,
Building and furnishing mosques for people to worship in is a good and righteous deed for which the Lawgiver grants a great reward. It is a kind of sadaqah jaariyah which continues to bring reward after one dies.
Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“The mosques of Allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day; perform As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as-Salaah), and give Zakah and fear none but Allah. It is they who are on true guidance” [al-Tawbah 9:18]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever builds a mosque, Allah will build for him something like it in Paradise.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (450) and Muslim (533) from the hadeeth of ‘Uthmaan (may Allah be pleased with him).
And Allah knows best.
