In Part 6, we will explore the Hindu festival, Maha Shivratri. a Hindu festival that honours the god Shiva. It is celebrated annually in February or March. The festival is marked by fasting, prayer, meditation, and worship services.
What is it celebrated for?
• Celebrates the wedding of Shiva and Parvati
• Celebrates Shiva's dance of destruction, which also led to creation
• Celebrates Shiva's dance of bliss, the "Anandatandava"
• Celebrates Shiva's taking the form of the Lingam, a column of light that symbolizes his infinite existence
How is it celebrated?
• Devotees fast, pray, meditate, and leave offerings for Shiva
• Devotees pour water or milk over the Shiva linga, a stone sculpture of Shiva
• Devotees decorate the linga with garlands and flowers
• Devotees offer fruits and incense sticks
• Devotees visit Shiva temples or go on a pilgrimage to the Jyotirlingams
Why is it important?
• It is believed to be the most powerful time to seek spiritual awakening, inner peace, and divine blessings
• It represents triumph over destruction and darkness
• It is a notable festival in Hinduism, marking a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world
