since about 2 years you are waiting for a real 3D blocks tutorial, in which i explain all the details of my 3D Blocks and which rules make them look like they look. It is all about shadows, light, and simply having enough shades of all colours, because you need lighter shades for reflections and light and need darker ones for the shading.
