Painting a dark background in watercolor can be a really effective way of making the main subject stand out.
In this video, professional artist Paul Hopkinson shares the way he painted this dark background around a study of a Bald Eagle in watercolor. The colors really set off the bird and add a moody element to the whole painting. Paul goes through the whole process, demonstrating how he controls the water and pigment on the paper. This creates a dark background which blends out to the white of the paper.
