In this second episode of our Paralysis Treatment series, Dr. Puru Dhawan discusses the importance of a paralysis patient's diet in their recovery process.

Diet for paralysis patients:
In Ayurveda, food is considered medicine, and proper nutrition is crucial for a patient's health.
A paralysis patient should consume more protein, especially cow's milk, which is low-fat and contains all necessary vitamins and minerals. Additionally, soup with vegetables, pulses, and mushrooms can help in digestion and increase appetite.
Dr. Dhawan also emphasizes the importance of putting food in the body to ensure recovery.
High cholesterol can lead to brain damage, so it is crucial to avoid boiled and fried foods.

Role of proper food intake:
A patient's condition worsened due to a lack of proper food intake, leading to a decline in their cholesterol levels. To reduce cholesterol, one must reduce fat, not protein. Protein is essential for the body's recovery after a brain stroke in dialysis.
A balanced diet, including protein-rich foods like soup, pulses, green leafy vegetables, and dry fruits like almonds and walnuts, can help.
Dry fruits, such as walnuts, almonds, figs, and raisins, can help sharpen the brain and aid in recovery.

Moderation in food intake:
It is important to limit food intake and avoid eating anything in excess. Non-vegetarians, especially those who eat fish, can benefit from a fast recovery rate due to its high nutritional value and easy digestion.
However, it is important to limit the amount of protein a non-vegetarian gets from soup, as the body will use more protein.

Role of Neuroplasticity in recovery:
Neuroplasticity occurs as we age, and it plays a crucial role in our learning abilities. It is a natural process that occurs in our bodies, and it is beneficial for paralysis patients. During the first six months of recovery, the brain starts learning and regaining its capacity. However, if neuroplasticity stops, recovery will be slow.
To help patients recover, physiotherapists should focus on promoting neuroplasticity and teaching the patient to walk and walk as well. This involves using the patient's legs to the maximum and observing their movements to correct errors. It is essential to take the patient's pain in the initial stages and work hard to help them walk.
The patient's will is key to their recovery, and physiotherapists should work hard from the beginning to ensure they have the courage to walk and recover.

Common mistakes patients make in their recovery process:
- Trying to do all the activities.
- Doing exercises only on the bed and not starting to walk.
- Thinking that they will be able to move and walk only after they have fully recovered.

There are two groups of patients: those recovering and those not. The patient who recovers has worked hard to move constantly from day one, while those who do not recover have not worked hard.
The first six months of recovery are crucial for understanding the brain's function. After six months, the patient should search for “neuroplasticity” on the internet to understand how the brain works.
