I created this video tutorial, entitled "Bistre: Part 4 (B) Sepia Master Copy on a Hand-Prepared Paper Surface", in order to draw your attention to the intermediate phase of a master copy drawing exercise. Our master image is by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725–1805), his "Head of a Girl", 18th century, created with “chalk on slightly textured cream laid paper.” The portrait lives in the Worcester Art Museum, in Massachusetts, in the United States of America.
This installment in my full Patreon series, "Bistre: Artistic conventions within Sepia Drawing", handles several in-process concerns which govern a necessary intellectual framework for success in the drawing process. These include recognition of the delicate nature of our paper tone (from Part 4A, available in full on Patreon.com/DanThompsonArt), the interesting question of not “over finishing” a master copy, as well as the nature of reproduction-based temperature variance with historical drawings – something the museum world commonly navigates.
Part 4C will vastly expand the material engagement of this copy, building upon the present layer and contributing more to our conversation on gaining insight through exploration and research (available, along with Part 4A, at: patreon.com/DanThompsonArt). I hope you find the lesson as useful and rewarding as I have in preparing it for you.
