The series features rare archival photographs and film footage, together with the concise narration of historian Bruce Gamble, to tell the history of Marine Fighting Squadron 214 in the Pacific War from 1942 – 1945. The squadron fought in the Solomon Islands at such fabled locations as Guadalcanal and Bougainville, with many missions over Japanese strongholds such as Rabaul, New Britain.

Special emphasis is placed on Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, leader of the Black Sheep Squadron through its most intense combat tours. He flew P-40 Warhawks with the famed Flying Tigers before leading the Black Sheep, earned a Medal of Honor, and remains the highest scoring fighter ace in Marine Corps history with 28 official victories.

Strong emphasis is also placed on the stories of the fighter pilots who served in VMF-214.

As the creator of Skywarrior Media, Bruce Gamble has gathered the most accurate and authentic archival footage available—some in color. Many rare clips feature famous World War II aircraft such as F4U Corsairs, F4F Wildcats, F6F Hellcats, P-40 Warhawks, A6M Zeros, SBD Dauntlesses, TBF Avengers, B-17 Fortresses, B-24 Liberators, B-25 Mitchells, G4M Bettys. Many scenes include actual gun camera footage of intense aerial combat. Other scenes feature famous ships such as the aircraft carrier USS Franklin, and there are several depictions of aircraft accidents and crashes.
