Paying for the New York Subway Using OMNY (plus how fare capping can save you money)

Paying for the New York subway and buses is soon changing. The MTA is currently phasing out the MetroCard in favor of the OMNY readers which have been released in 2019. OMNY is the tap-and-go payment system by the MTA (also known as NFC near field communication), a new smart ticketing system for public transport. It's basically the MTA's contactless payment system where you can pay directly with your phone, credit card, or other smart device. By some estimate, NYC commuters have about another 2 years to make this transition. So that we're not so far behind the times, in this video we are going to talk about the plans for these OMNY readers (aka tap-and-pay or NFC), how to use the OMNY system and the types of payments that are available, explain how fare capping works, how transfers work with the OMNY (does the omny have transfers?), how multiple riders can use the OMNY and how fare capping works with multiple rides, and some notes for tourists who are thinking about using the OMNY readers (because the OMNY might not be the best way to pay for transportation depending on your situation). While there is no OMNY weekly pass or OMNY unlimited, there is a pilot program right now called fare capping. Stay tuned for a future video that will discuss just the OMNY card.
